Church building to be transformed into college and community hub

A Bootle church building will be revived for the community as part of a £3 million Hugh Baird College scheme.

Liverpool-based Crossfield Construction has been appointed as the lead contractor to develop the Health, Engagement and Training Hub.

Through the Oriel Road project, the existing St Winefride’s Church will be extensively refurbished to become a training academy and base for health and social care qualifications delivered by the college in partnership with Mersey Care.

A new Life Rooms space will also be built on the footprint of the current presbytery, providing a place to deliver practical life skills and a hub for all members of the local community.

Construction work is due to get underway on site by the end of this month, with the new Health, Engagement and Training Hub expected to be fully operational by autumn 2018.

The project was awarded a share of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s £9m boost to support skills and learning opportunities for communities across the area.

Yana Williams, principal and chief executive of Hugh Baird College, says: “The creation of the Health, Engagement and Training Hub doesn’t just benefit the students of Hugh Baird College. It will have a far wider reach. The new centre will provide a community resource that is open to all who feel ready to take those important first steps to wellbeing.”

“The redevelopment of the St Winefride’s Church will also bring back to life an important community venue and will provide vital life changing services and welcoming shared spaces for the benefit of the people of Bootle.”
