Update: This event has been postponed due to forecast bad weather.
A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council says: “The latest forecast shows there will be heavy rain and blustery conditions at the Pier Head on Saturday afternoon, so rather than risk a complete washout we have decided to postpone the mini Commonwealth Games event until a future date.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience and will let people know when it is rearranged.”
Sports enthusiasts can try a host of activities tomorrow (3 September) as Liverpool’s waterfront stages a mini Commonwealth Games village.
From 1-5pm nine sports will be on offer to take part in at the iconic destination, including athletics, hockey, cycling, gymnastics and tennis.
Winners of the day’s competitive sports will also get to enjoy their special moment on the podium as medals are presented.
During the event Liverpool FC Foundation coaches will be holding football skills training, and Liverpool Commonwealth Games ambassadors including Everton FC legend Graeme Sharp will also be on hand.
Meanwhile, visitors will be able to find out more about the Fit for Me campaign which is being run by Liverpool City Council and NHS Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to help the city become more active, with a chance to receive a voucher for a free swim.
Assistant Mayor and cabinet member for leisure and culture, Councillor Wendy Simon says: “We have all seen the incredible success that our athletes have had in Rio recently and we want people who are inspired to get involved in sport to find out more about what’s on offer in the city.
“It’s not about becoming the next Katarina Johnson Thompson or Bianca Walkden, but is about showing how enjoyable sport can be and how it can help improve your physical and mental health and wellbeing.
“The Pier Head is a great setting to hold this type of event and, as well as taking part in the sports taster sessions, people will also be able to spend time in the area to enjoy the activities on offer in the Liverpool Village.”
The event is being sponsored by promotional merchandise firm Wild Thang, which will provide the medals and winners’ t shirts.
Liverpool Watersports Centre on Queens Dock will also be offering free sailing and kayaking taster sessions as part of the day, although pre-booking is essential. To secure a slot call 0151 708 9322.
