Islington vision to go on show to the public during drop-in event

Local people can give their views on the regeneration of Liverpool’s Islington when a pop-up event takes place this week.

Social enterprise PLACED will visit the area with its repurposed caravan Ed (pictured) as part of its ongoing Better Places Together campaign.

The 23 June workshop will take place between 12pm and 4pm, focusing on the ‘true potential’ and heritage of the district which is surrounded by major developments including Knowledge Quarter Liverpool.

A group of local stakeholders, led by business owners Suzy Jenions, Jason Abbot and Paul Durose, hopes Islington will become a thriving mixed-use destination where new businesses can work alongside established family businesses and people can live there with an appropriate retail and food provision and a quality environment.

The stakeholders are in the early stages of developing a visioning document for the area, to be known as the ‘Fabric District’, and the public will be able to air views on the ideas so far during the event.

Jason Abbot says: “We’re really excited that we are now at a point where we can share our ideas to date and invite the public to respond, which will help shape the project as we go forward.”

The PLACED event follows a previous workshop focusing on the city centre’s Ropewalks area, and director Jo Harrop says: “Following the success of our launch event, we’re really excited to be working with stakeholders in Islington.

“This is an exciting project, led by local businesses, and with real potential for transformation. It is fantastic to see this bottom-up approach. It’s what our campaign is all about.”

The Better Places Together drop-in session will be held in Monument Place, with creative, interactive activities taking place throughout the afternoon.
