Thousands gather for Christmas lights switch-on

Thousands gathered in Paradise Street yesterday evening (10 November) for the illumination of Liverpool ONE’s 30 metre Christmas tree.

Confetti, snow and street entertainment was on the bill as the city marked the beginning of the festive period with a special event.

Father Christmas made a guest appearance on the roof of John Lewis, backed by a pyrotechnic display and Christmas songs, and popular children’s character Shrek showed up to whet Liverpool’s appetite for the upcoming DreamWorks Lights showcase at St George’s Hall, which starts on 26 November.

Cast members from Merseyside’s latest theatre productions were also out in force, including former ‘Hollyoaks’ actress Jorgie Porter and stars from the Empire, Playhouse, Epstein and Unity theatres.

Donna Howitt, marketing director at Liverpool ONE, says: “We are absolutely delighted to once again mark the start of the Christmas period in the city. There is no better way to get Christmassy than seeing the reaction on people’s faces, feeling entertained and enjoying such a spectacular show with their loved ones.

“Christmas is such a magical time of year for so many people, especially our youngest visitors. Whether it was seeing Father Christmas or catching a glimpse of Shrek, we hope that tonight created plenty of happy memories for all our guests.”
